An EP That's Been Anchoring Me

As many of you will know, this year has involved lots of transition for me. The discomfort of this change in my life and the stress of not totally knowing what's ahead has made this year a challenging one.

A big source of comfort and encouragement has come through a short 3-song EP by Sandra McCracken and Ben Shive called "The Still Point". Although it has only three songs, they have been three messages that I have needed:

  1. The first song is called "What Is". After a long instrumental intro, the song begins reflecting on our tendency to think about the past or the future, neglecting to fully appreciate the present moment. For me, as I have impatiently wished to fast-forward through time to the point where I am fully settled, this has been such a helpful reminder to be grateful for today.

  2. The second song is "He Is Moving". This year has involved a lot of me waiting on God and feeling like he is being more silent or moving slower than I'd like. The song has reminded me, "He is moving right under our feet. He is moving, open your eyes and see." I've shifted my mindset. Where I used to complain that God wasn't doing anything, now I try to trust that He is always at work in my life, and now I pray that I would have the eyes to see it.

  3. The final song is "Do You Dream". In my lowest and most discouraged moments, I can be tempted to think that things will always be this way and lose sight of a better future. And to be clear, I don't believe that God promises us ever-increasing health, wealth, and happiness. But this song gets me to reflect on what God's dreams for me might be and gives me hope that there is goodness ahead even when I don't fully see it.

In addition to the lyrics of the EP being encouraging, the music itself is beautiful, reflective, and calming. I encourage you to check it out!

P.S.

I also want to briefly commend two other projects she's a part of:

  • I really enjoy the children's music made by Rain for Roots, which McCracken is a part of. Its lyrics are rich and meaningful but still accessible to kids.

  • Also check out the music made by FAITHFUL, an impressive collaboration of female artists, of which McCracken is also a member. They've been putting out honest and meaningful music that I've been enjoying.
