"Bellsburg": Classic Songs Remade For a New Generation

As an artist who made music mainly through the 80s and early 90s, Rich Mullins was mostly before my time. Growing up in the church and listening to a lot of Christian music at home I was aware of some of his biggest hits like "Awesome God" and "Sometimes By Step" - but honestly didn't think much of them at the time.

It's only been as an adult that I've learnt how impactful his music and even his faith in general has been. James Bryan Smith (an author I quite respect and enjoy) wrote a biography of Rich Mullins called An Arrow Pointing to Heaven because of Mullins' clear and unique relationship with God.

Recently a number of talented Christian artists came together and redid a number of his songs as a tribute to him (he passed away in 1997) and as a way of bringing renewed attention to his songs. The album is called "Bellsburg" and it's one I really like. Mullins' lyrics are poetic, vulnerable, and clearly come from a place of a genuine relationship and journey with God. He refreshingly stays away from a lot of the "Christianese" bible-language that is sometimes overused in Christian music which gives his lyrics an earthy quality. And on top of this, these artists have given a more contemporary "facelift" to his songs sonically, making them more accessible to listeners in 2023.
