Daily Office Apps

Something I've gotten into over the past year or so is praying the Daily Office. I've been doing it in fits and starts, off and on, until the past month or so when I've been much more intentional about doing it consistently.

If you've spent your whole life in non-traditional and non-liturgical churches like I have, you may not even be familiar with what the Daily Office is. I know I wasn't until recently. I don't have the expertise to give you all the details or history on it, so I suggest just doing a Google search if you're interested. But the two key components are:

  1. Stopping 2 or 3 times for prayer per day. The length of those prayer times is not significant (personally I've been finding a max of 5 minutes each works for me). This can promote your awareness of and connection to God throughout the whole day, rather than just cramming it all in for morning devotions.

  2. Structuring your prayer time around reading written prayers. These written prayers are sometimes taken straight from the bible (particularly the Psalms), as well as prayers written by Christians through history. Reading written prayers can be helpful for those who don't know what to pray for, they can put words to things we feel we can't articulate well, and they can draw our minds to ideas that we wouldn't think of on our own.

For some more discussion on the benefits of praying the Daily Office, I encourage you to listen to:

  1. An episode from The Kingdom Roots with Scot McKnight podcast from Mar 5 2020 called "How can we pray like Jesus? (Rebroadcast) - KR 32"

  2. An episode from The Emotionally Healthy Leader Podcast from June 1 2020 called "Why You Need More Than a "Quiet Time": Part 1"

If you want to try it out for yourself, two of the best apps I've seen are:

One tip you may find helpful. Personally I find the prayer readings for each time of prayer to be almost always too long. I almost always skip certain sections of the prayers. If they're something you want to try, just make them work for you based on your time and which parts connect with you.
